What Do Doulas Do?

What do doulas do?   So many people wanna know what the deal is with doulas. What do they do and why are they there. Well the word doula came from a Greek word meaning “a woman who serves”. So you must be thinking, what?!?! Serves who and why? Doulas can play a major role in a woman’s labor. She is there to offer support to the laboring woman. Doulas are trained to assist a woman through childbirth.  A doula is extremely important because she offers continuous support to a woman during labor. Her support and training isn’t that of a medical model and stays in tune with whatever that laboring woman wants. A doula is well aware that this changes and ensures that the laboring mother is her number one priority.

Doulas work in a variety of settings including hospitals, birthing centers and they also attend home births. They also offer support post delivery. She may offer the new mother a cup of tea and/or some type of small meal or she may just stand aside and take in the bonding that may be taking place. A doula’s main concern is to ensure that she is supporting that woman’s labor and delivery and all that comes allow with it through that woman’s eyes and not her own.
